A Research Now study shows 84 percent of drivers know handling your cellphone while driving is dangerous. The survey also shows that 90 percent of drivers handle their phone while driving, despite the overwhelming majority knowing it’s dangerous. To help combat this, Chevrolet has developed a new app to keep you in check.
The Call Me Out app, which developers created during a recent hackathon, uses two highly influential forces, technology and your loved ones, to keep your hands off your phone and eyes on the road.
The system is pretty simple but also very effective. First, the Call Me Out app uses the phone’s accelerometer and GPS to sense when you pick up the phone at speeds above 5 mph. When it senses this action, the Call Me Out plays prerecorded messages from loved ones reminding you to keep your eyes on the road. It also gamifies the process with scoreboards and rankings based on who handles their phone the least while on the road.
The app is available for download for free at the Google Play store.
